The Phyllotactic Spider

Chance and chaos are powerful tools for designers. And chance comes with experimentation. Giving room for error to happen can sometimes lead to something unexpected and surprising.

The phyllotactic spiral is beautiful in itself, almost mystical. This spider came to life accidentally when I overlapped two phyllotactic spirals of slightly different sizes. After moving them around a moire pattern began to appear and a spider was drawn.

The spiral was generated with a Scriptographer script, developed by Ken Frederick. The animation was crafted in Illustrator and then animated frame by frame in Photoshop.
